A lotion is a topical preparation intended for application to unbroken skin. Lotions are usually applied to external skin with bare hands or a clean cloth. Many lotions are formulated not as a medicine delivery system, but simply to smooth and soften the skin.
The key components of a skin care lotion or cream are: water and oil, an emulsifier to prevent separation of these two ingredients and additives. A wide variety of additives such as fragrances, glycerol, dyes, preservatives, proteins and stabilizing agents are commonly added to lotions.
